WIGGY, is an affectionate name I was given by a special person in my life. They felt it described the intensity, love, joy, giving nature and eccentric energy of my personality. I embrace the name and have bestowed the it upon the ladies I paint.
My life has been an interesting tapestry of places I have lived: New York City, Mexico City, Maui and Seattle, they are a part of my paintings, as are the experience from each of these places. My journey as an artist has been greatly enhanced by the music I love, the music that moves my very soul. Jazz, blues, R&B and classical music all move me in every way. Feeling inspired and intensified by the music itself my feelings spill over onto my canvas and the figures I create. These are the Wiggys, ladies of inner strength, whimsy and confident attitudes and the musicians that make you feel and taste the sound they play.
The varied and visual differences of the places I have lived are also a part of my paintings. The vivid colors and energies of New York, Mexico City, Maui and Seattle all weave their way into the richness and vibrancy, movement and edginess of my work. Whether it is with my Wiggys, musicians, golfers, dancers or grief paintings there is always immense movement and a story to unveil in each work of art. Most of all, my commitment to growing through the pressure and pain, laughter and learning and embracing the struggles as well as the high points and joys of life, all reverberate through my work. I paint in mixed medium, utilizing a myriad of products, water color, acrylic, gauche, pastels, ink, print making paper, 300 pound water color paper, collages, I use whatever works to bring the painting to life.
Along with my education at Seattle University, Burnely (purchased by Art Institute) and Pratt School of Art have helped me incorporate challenges and change in my art, sculpture and writing. Beginning 9 years ago, my late husband struggled with Alzheimer’s. We decided together that we would embrace the challenge before us and continue to enjoy our relationship to the fullest and experience as much as we could together as quickly as possible. A 22 year journey together with much love was a highlight of my life. We chose to deal with the disease with humor which is reflected in many of my paintings. Our choice to find joy in this journey and the ultimate struggle all were a strong part of my growth as an artist. I am now working on a book “Laughing my way through Alzheimer’s”. I am stronger and even more compassionate and have learned to embrace all that life puts in front of me. If you look at my paintings you will in most cases find a heart or many incorporated in the piece. It reminds me, no matter what always “keep heart”. I sincerely hope my work reflects the journey and outcome of my life to date. An extensive part of what I have learned and savor is the diversity in all of us, particularly women. Despite our imperfections: big or little hips, large or skinny thighs, cellulite, flapping arms, big or no butts, drooping boobs, big or small lips, plump tummies, frizzy hair or no hair, whatever….it’s all a part of what makes us unique and beautiful. I embrace my own uniqueness and hope all who see and enjoy my paintings man or woman do as well….and see the beauty and integrity of living and loving the gift that is YOU! |

My Caribbean Indian and Dutch roots, the milk chocolate color of my skin and the intensity and happy nature of my personality all contribute to the persity of my work. My background in public relations, advertising and marketing and the gallery I owned help me to expose my art to many viewers.
